Trista Sutter on The Bachelorette Finale: Yay for Ed! Reid, Really?

by Trista Stutter, http://ca.eonline.com/uberblog/watch_with_kristin/b136390_trista_sutter_on_bachelorette_finale.html

Dun, dun, dun...It's finale recap time!

For 10 weeks, we've been watching Jillian's search for love. Yes, it's a television show that is out for ratings, but like millions of Americans, I continue to believe that two people can meet and fall in love under the harsh glare of reality-TV cameras.

Isn't that why we are all tuned in on Monday nights? The hope that love will win out, even in the most unusual and bizarre set of circumstances? Well, that's why I have my TiVo set! Am I biased? Sure. But when I look into the beautiful eyes of my children, I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt that love from a TV setup is most definitely possible. Will it be a reality for Jillian? Only time will tell. For now, though, I just want to see a happy ending to a crazy courtship.

No Mess, No Problem for The Bachelorette

The Bachlorette, Ed Swiderski, Jillian Harris ABC/MARIO PEREZ

The Bachelor or The Bachelorette? Ellen DeGeneres or Katie Holmes? And rocket scientists or regular ol' sitcom types?

The answers—and more questions—in our weekly TV quiz:

1. Who's the bigger closer: Jason Mesnick or Jillian Harris? The answer, which is Mesnick, isn't the whole answer. In its own way, last night's rather routine finale for the Harris edition of The Bachelorette was as successful as Mesnick's famously messy Bachelor farewell in March. The Bachelorette season closer scored its biggest audience since 2004, ABC said; in March, The Bachelor scored its biggest audience since 2003.

2. Define big. In the case of The Bachelorette, you're talking nearly 10 million viewers, per preliminary Nielsen estimates. With The Bachelor, the audience numbered about 15.5 million (and then hit 17 million for the Melissa Rycroft-dumping, postfinale show).

Trista Sutter Blogs About The Bachelorette: David the Belligerent Jackass

Trista Sutter

I can hardly believe we've already reached the always crazy "The Men Tell All" special. I guess I should know how time flies, though, with two kiddos under 2 years old! Here's my take on some of the highlights...

Here are some of the best (and worst) quotes and moments from the bantering boys:

  • Sasha's description of Jake, saying he's probably had the same haircut since he was 6 years old.
  • David: "As far as I'm concerned, that's as bad as it gets," referring to Tanner telling Jillian someone had a girlfriend. So let me get this straight. You think that coming onto the show with a girlfriend is better? Tanner's just the messenger, though I still don't think he was right to put it out there and not follow through.
  • David saying that Juan should "go drown himself." And everyone thought my "filth of the earth" comment about Wes was bad!
  • Tanner F. saying that Jake "pulled a Mesnick," which is when a grown man leans over a railing and cries, aka Jason Mesnick. Genius.
  • David saying that the problem he had with Juan was that he wouldn't drink with the rest of the guys all day. Why is that cool? Why does that make you a man? Maybe downing beers all day with the dudes in your frat house was cool back in college, but life after you graduate should mean more than throwing back a few cold ones—especially when you are trying to focus on finding love.
  • I had been looking forward to seeing Jesse, but the hair lip has got to go!
  • Chris pointing out that being on the Bachelorette is a true violation of David's warped man code and then backing up Juan saying that he has no obligation to explain himself to David for not doing a shot. "Who gives a crap" is right! Thank you, Mr. Harrison!
  • Tanner P. explaining that Wes winked at him that he had a girl back home and David saying "everyone has a girl back home." First, finally glad to hear where Tanner heard Wes had a girlfriend. Second, seriously, David? Did you not learn anything about how horrid your words and actions look to America when you watched yourself this season? Doesn't seem like change is in your near future, although I had hopes.

Trista Sutter Blogs About The Bachelorette: Does Ed Need Cialis?

Original Bachelorette Trista Sutter is putting her reality-TV experience to use for us here at Watch With Kristin, blogging about Jillian Harris' quest for the perfect guy. Take it away, Trista...

Before we get into last night's episode, let me address some of my Twitter followers out there who commented on last week's blog about Wes' departure. I continue to believe that Wes is not the most sincere, the most intelligent or even the most talented of all bachelors. I do take back that he is "filth of the earth," though, and offer my apologies for going too far with a phrase that should be reserved for (as one of my tweeters said) rapists and child molesters. I also want it known that there is absolutely no excuse for threatening his family or going after his supposed girlfriend, Laurel. This show was put on TV for entertainment purposes. Wes may not be the most stand-up book on the shelf, but that doesn't mean he and his family deserve to feel unsafe in their own home.

Enough about that, moving on to last night's episode in Hawaii with the final four guys...

Controversy and drama were the name of the game last week, so I am thankful we are starting fresh (Spain to Hawaii? Jillian is a lucky girl!).

Jillian's boy time starts with Kiptyn, and on the menu is a rope course as a starter. Not much to comment on other than the cute wink he sent her during the leap-of-faith jump and the genuine support and calmness he offered her to combat her fears. The main course, however, takes them to dinner on a beautiful balcony, and Jillian immediately (well, of what we are shown) puts on a journalistic hat. I love Jillian, and I know that we only see a small percentage of their date, but does anyone else feel like she is more concerned about asking questions than living in the moment?

Don't get me wrong. Questions, answers and deep conversation are important, especially because of this incredibly unusual dating scenario. For some reason though, it just seems like a job to her, and it makes it less fun to watch (not that I'm changing the channel anytime soon!) Everyone wants to see love happen naturally, not because the guy she ends up with answered all her questions "correctly."

Trista Sutter Blogs About The Bachelorette: "Filth-of-the-Earth Wes" Is Gone!

Trista Sutter Hal Horowitz/Getty Images

Original Bachelorette Trista Sutter is putting her reality-TV experience to use for us here at Watch With Kristin by blogging about Jillian Harris' quest for the perfect guy. Here's Trista's take on last night's episode of The Bachelorette...

Last night's Bachelorette was set in Spain, and not that I'm complaining about my once-in-a-lifetime experience, but I do love to travel and have to admit that I felt a tinge of green watching this episode.

Things start off nicely before wrapping up in one of the most shocking revelations to date. Check it out...

Kiptyn starts off the week's dates. Jillian wonders if he is the perfect package and out of her league. Personally, I don't think anyone's out of anyone's league. It's all about chemistry and they've got it, minus all those not-so visually pleasing kisses. But as I've always said, maybe she likes outstretched lips and all the visually pleasing kisses ended up on the cutting room floor.

Their date included holding hands and strolling through Madrid (so romantic), learning to dance Flamenco (so embarrassing) and a yummy escargot (so slimy!) dinner. At dinner, serious conversation sparks and that's a definite necessity. Six weeks is a short amount of time (yes, I do know that, and yes, I am crazy for doing the show, but it worked for me and I have no regrets!), so you have to milk each second for all it's worth.

There were a couple of bad signs on the date, though:
1. He reminds her of her dad. Ewww.
2. She rejects the card from host Chris Harrison to "forego their individual rooms and stay in the fantasy suite." When I was in her shoes, that time alone played such a huge part in my personal decision-making process and it had absolutely nothing to do with sleeping with them.

Next up was Reid, who joins Jillian for a picnic in Sevilla. Love his humor. Love his honesty. Love how naturally happy they appear together. At dinner that night, romance and heart-to-hearts were abundant, but yet again she decides against sharing the fantasy suite. She said "next time," which makes me wonder if Jillian is the first in a long line of bachelors or bachelorettes who gets two weeks of suite-sharing opportunities. Bottom line: Reid is right up there with Kiptyn, and if they don't both get chosen, I'll know how truly pathetic my guessing skills are.

Loving Jillian's outfit for Ed's date. Supercute. Ed doesn't look bad himself! They start out on a carriage ride through Sevilla, then head to an outdoor café for a glass (or five!) of wine, walk through the streets and fountains of Spain and end the day with a breezy dinner.

So glad he realized that he made a mistake. I wonder what the situation at work was, though. Did he lose his job or work so hard that he earned another possible three weeks away? I'm curious, but not because I question his integrity and wonder if he'll do it to her again. He couldn't get her out of his mind back in Chicago, and I always believed that the person you end up with should be someone you can't live without. Does he have to still prove himself? Most definitely. During their daytime date, I think he did that and more, and we only get to see the best parts, in the editor's mind at least! For me, he racked up the points with:

1. Admitting that he would've taken her to karaoke on his hometown date. That is just so out of left field, but so endearing and makes me love him even more!
2. All that kissing! Even more points went into his corner because of the incredible show of chemistry as well as the utter lack of awkwardness. When the kissing is that good, it tells you a lot. All I know is it reminded me of my time with Ryan on the couch at the W in Seattle. That was the night I knew I could kiss just him for the rest of my life. Maybe that's what Jillian was thinking!
3. Great conversation.
4. A great laugh.
5. His infectious smile. I swear he could be a smile or teeth model if there is such a thing!

At dinner, the infamous fantasy suite card is served to them on what looks like a silver platter. How fancy. Jillian stares into Ed's eyes coaxing an answer from him and after he not-so-surprisingly says yes, she turns around and yanks his desire right out from under him and throws the option in the trash. Sorry, Jillian, but if you were never going to let it happen, you shouldn't have batted your eyelashes to get him to answer when you knew he would've accepted the invitation. How can spending more time together confuse you? Closed doors away from cameras aren't all about getting naked—at least they weren't to this one time Bachelorette, regardless of what the producers wanted the card to represent. They are purely a chance at more quality time and that should offer anything but confusion. Thank goodness Ed was on the same page as me and could convince her otherwise…and not in a sleazy way. He just wants to get the time back that he foolishly gave up and I think the fantasy suite was a great start to making amends to the past.

TRISTA BLOGS: IS WES STUPID?

Trista Sutter Blogs About The Bachelorette: Is Wes "Just Plain Stupid?"

Original Bachelorette Trista Sutter is putting her reality TV experience to use for us here at Watch With Kristin by blogging about Jillian Harris' quest for the perfect guy. Take it away, Trista...

Another week, another Bachelorette, and another blog by little ol' me. To those who have commented that they don't think of me as an expert on relationships, or even on this show for that matter, I'm right there with ya. I am far from an expert, but I guess those who hired me saw some value in my opinion. If you don't, no worries. That's the beauty of reading this on your computer: There is an off switch! Each week, I am simply asked to comment on what we see as viewers from someone who's been there.

Glad that many of you are enjoying my commentary! I don't realize how much I love writing until I sit down with my laptop every week and get the chance to release some creative juices. Thanks to those at E! Online for the opportunity as it's helping me feel like my brain is still minimally viable after having two children.

OK, now about last night's episode...

I am bummed that Ed is gone still, but understand his rationale. Love is never guaranteed, especially when there are other guys in the mix and camera crews are involved. Even in this economy, though, I feel like a job is easier to come by than a true relationship that will last you forever, and I'm questioning how he had a conference call with his boss. When you sign up for the show, you sign up with the full knowledge that you will not have any communication with the outside world. It seems a bit suspicious. Regardless, though, I believe that everything happens for a reason and if he was meant to live his life without Jillian, that will come to fruition—reality show or not.

The week starts with a stunning ride through the mountains of Canada on the Rocky Mountaineer. Love that helicopters are given the week off!

Robby gets the first solo date. After time spent relishing the gorgeous view from the train, they have dinner in the caboose and finally get to have a serious sit-down chat. I love Robby's attitude and adorable accent. He's an attractive guy, but something's still lacking. Smiles are there and drama is absent, but is there any intrigue and passion between them? Not when you look in Jillian's eyes.

Those of you who plan to comment that I called him an immature loser who doesn't deserve happiness because he's a lowly bartender who makes no money and can't support a family, please move your cursor back up to the start of the paragraph and have your eyes revisit what I wrote. I think Robby's a nice guy. No, I've never met him, but from all camera angles, he looks like a nice guy.

Does he make as much money as Jesse? Probably not, based on their self-described careers. Does that matter? Not a chance. Money doesn't make the world go around, although I'm sure for the wealthy, it keeps stress levels about bills at bay. Love is what matters (I know, quit with the clichés!), and either it's there or it's not. Jillian decided it wasn't there, and as if the train could sense her decision they dramatically came to a halt. Sad, for sure, but that just means she's closer to being forever happy (hopefully!). Even sadder though is that Michael is crying over Robby's departure. Gotta love a sensitive soul, but I think those tears are a bit off the deep end.

The Bachelorette, Jillian Harris ABC/CRAIG SJODIN

Somehow after Robby leaves, Wes gets the golden ticket of snuggle-time with Jillian. I want to know how he weaseled that in! It just makes me sick to my stomach for her that he says he has everything to gain, he "has a hidden agenda," and he'll always have her wrapped around his little finger. What makes me even sicker is his bit about tasting and eating the fame he is going to get out of being on the show. Oh, no he didn't!

I'm sure there have been plenty of people on this series, as well as The Bachelor, to crave self-promotion for their singing or acting careers. To fully admit it, though, especially when you know Jillian will see what you are saying at some point down the road, makes me wonder if Wes is incredibly hurtful, extraordinarily selfish, drugged-up, just plain stupid—or all of the above. It also makes me wonder if editing is to blame. Was he finishing his sentences with, "But I've fallen for Jillian and I know now that my music career will be second fiddle," and we just aren't seeing that? If only Chris Harrison could spill the beans, I'd give him a call right now!

Group date started with snowshoeing. Note to producers: not so exciting to watch. Tanner did return to the screen as creepy foot-fetish guy, but not even that can hold a candle to him dropping his drawers when they went in to hang out by the fire. Even if he's "blessed," it just was not the time or the place. Oh, Tanner.

Kiptyn and Jesse: love 'em. Especially Kiptyn's abs! Yowza! Wes: Not loving him, and that's putting it mildly. Get that he wants promotion, but at the sake of Jillian's happiness? Maybe it will help his career, but I can't imagine he's gaining many fans with his cruel motives. Great voice or not, the fans of country music get behind people with integrity and heart, and that clearly is not Wes.

Reid + Jillian = great chemistry. The activities of their date weren't spectacular (all but enjoying the sunset by having drinks on ice—literally!), but I loved Reid's humor, honesty, laid-back attitude and openness. Not sure if he'll be the one to win her heart, but he seems like a contender at this point?and with his rose, he'll get to introduce her to his family.

Time for roses?

Kiptyn and Reid are safe, and with five hometown dates, she's handing out three more.

Me and my girls were set on Jesse and Wes, but the third was the shocker. Whoa! Michael won her over in the moment they shared before the dramatic music started, and Tanner and Jake are sent home to Texas. Tanner was not such a shock, as I thought he'd be gone last week. Jake, on the other hand, seemed to be a shoo-in early on. His story of being the nice guy and finishing last (or somewhere in the middle) continued.

Now, as for the previews for next week, one word: wow! I have to admit that I wasn't as into this episode as others, but when they gave us a peek of the remaining episodes, I was intrigued to say the least. I can't wait for next week!
