And that the engagement came after a series of dramatic twists and turns, including when Swiderski left the show earlier in the season to try to keep his job as a technology consultant, only to return two episodes later after realizing he'd made the wrong decision.
Harris, who is Canadian, will move to Chicago in September to live with Swiderski. They plan to get married in Canada in a year to 18 months.

Despite a season of hurdles and surprises, Vancouver's bachelorette, Jillian Harris, is working towards a strong, genuine relationship with fiance Ed Swiderski away from the media spotlight now that the fifth season of The Bachelorette has ended.
The couple secretly dated while the show was on the air and now are trying to reclaim their privacy, especially amid allegations that Swiderski was involved with two other women while on the show.
Harris is taking the gossip in stride.
"You don't have a strong, open relationship like this without a lot of hurdles," he says. "We are trying to get on with our lives and away from the limelight."
She has acknowledged there are many career opportunities coming her way as a result of the show. The reality star had to quit her job as an interior designer for Browns restaurants before taking part in The Bachelorette, but admits that her dream job has been to have her own design show on television.

Even though two months have past since the finale was shot in Hawaii, Rosenthal confesses to PEOPLE that his feelings for Harris haven’t gone away. “When I saw her [at the "After the Final Rose" special], feelings came back,” he tells PEOPLE. “But everything happens for a reason. That’s the way I think in life and just knowing that makes everything easier.”

Could she be a "Bachelorette" again?
The finale only aired on July 27 — but Ed Swiderski and his new fiance, Bachelorette Jillian Harris, might already be on the rocks.
Two women are speaking out about Swiderski's lying and cheating ways and warning Harris to leave him now, reports the latest issue of Us Weekly.
Just eight days after Swiderski popped the question on "The Bachelorette," he supposedly slept with his ex-girlfriend, Lindsey Johnson.
A day later, the charismatic consultant allegedly tried to bed another woman, Bethany Steffen, texting her to "bring beer and condoms," Steffen tells the magazine.
Oh, and about those women who said Ed was still dating them as he wooed Jillian . . .
Q: What was it about the dating scene in Vancouver that made you want to explore life on a reality show?
A: It's funny, I did hear this a lot from girls and guys in Vancouver, that the dating scene is not easy in Vancouver. I think it was part me, and part the city. I was a bit of a workaholic, I was married to my work and I had a hard time pulling myself away from it. I needed to put myself into some sort of extreme dating situation to get my mind off of work. But aside from that, the thing about Vancouver is, people are very independent and career-driven and very outdoorsy and cruise-y and laid back. I believe there are a lot of people who are just not ready to commit. I'm definitely generalizing . . . but generally I just found it's more of a casual dating scene, and not a serious dating scene in my experience.

Two of Ed's former flames, Bethany Steffen and Lindsey Johnson, have come forward with claims to Us Weekly saying Ed was intimate with both of them before, during and after "The Bachelorette" was filmed. Jill Martin of Us Weekly said, "It's the ultimate deception -- Ed wasn't living a double life, he was living a triple life!"
Today, Jillian denies those claims, saying, "It's not possible... it is absolutely made-up." But according to Johnson, she dated Ed for a year -- and he promised that they'd be engaged before the end of 2009. She drove him to the airport on March 25, where he assured her he'd only be on the show for two weeks.

The casting director of ABC’s “The Bachelor” is holding an open call 5 p.m. Thursday at the Intercontinental Montelucia Resort and Spa in Paradise Valley. The show is looking for women who would like to date the next bachelor. In a poll that asked users who they thought should be the next Bachelor, Kiptyn and Reid both nabbed 38 percent of the more than 3,000 votes cast. (Interestingly, in a poll launched before the final rose, the majority wanted Jillian to pick Reid.)
For anyone who might have entertained the notion — however fleetingly — of applying to be on a reality show, let Bachelorette contestant Wes Hayden's experiences serve as a cautionary tale. Hayden, a Texan country singer who exited the show last week after being portrayed as an opportunist with a girlfriend (and all-around jerk) in the quest for Jillian Harris's affections on ABC's The Bachelorette 5, has broken the first covenant of reality television: Never talk about what actually happened.
